Patri Guijarro is not just a midfielder. She is a leader. The Barcelona midfielder has been at the heart of the Catalan club’s dominant performance in recent years, winning two consecutive continental trebles and captaining the team in the absence of Alexia Putellas. She is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, and one of the most versatile players in the game.

Born in Palma de Mallorca, a city on the island of Mallorca, Patri started playing football at the age of six, inspired by her father and brother. She joined Collerense, where she played with boys until she was 14. She then moved to Collerense’s first team, where she made her senior debut at 15, and scored seven goals in 51 appearances.

In 2015, she signed for Barcelona, where she has been ever since. She quickly established herself as a key player for the team, playing as a central midfielder who can also operate as a defensive midfielder or an attacking midfielder. She is known for her vision, creativity, passing, tackling, and leadership skills. She has scored 37 goals in 177 appearances for Barcelona, making her one of the most prolific midfielders in the club’s history.

With Barcelona, she has won seven league titles, seven Copas de la Reina, and two UEFA Women’s Champions League trophies. She was instrumental in Barcelona’s historic 2020–21 season, when they became the first Spanish team to win the Champions League, beating Chelsea 4-0 in the final. They also won the league and the cup, completing the first continental treble in women’s football history.

Patri scored four goals in that Champions League campaign, including a crucial goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-finals. She also scored a hat-trick against Real Madrid in the league, and a goal against Logroño in the cup final. She was named in the UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the season for the second time in her career.

She repeated the feat in 2022–23, when Barcelona staged a remarkable comeback to beat Wolfsburg 3-2 in the Champions League final and retain their crown. She scored two goals in that final, including the equalizer and the winner. She also scored nine goals in the league, helping Barcelona clinch their seventh consecutive league title. She was once again named in the UEFA Women’s Champions League squad of the season.

On the international stage, Patri has been a regular for Spain since 2015, earning 52 caps and scoring 11 goals. She has played in three major tournaments with Spain: the 2017 and 2021 Euros, and the 2019 World Cup. She has also had success with Spain’s youth national teams, winning two UEFA Women’s U-17 Euros (in 2014 and 2015) and finishing runner-up in the 2018 U-20 World Cup. She received the Golden Ball and Golden Boot at that tournament as Spain’s best player and top scorer.
